Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.

Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 31, 2026. How we read a launch.

The startup idea

Pranath posted MaaTV on October 31. His mom could not use the smart TV. Too many apps, profile screens, typing with a remote. He built an app. She taps a show on her phone. The phone drives the TV: opens SonyLIV, searches, hits play. The repository is pranathnaik/maa-tv. There is no LICENSE file. It needs an Android phone on Android 8 or newer, and a Google TV or Android TV on the same Wi-Fi. It was tested on a Toshiba Google TV running Android TV 11, with SonyLIV and ZEE5 already installed and signed in. Setup turns on developer options by tapping the build number seven times, then turns on USB debugging. The phone finds the TV or you type the IP. The TV has to allow the connection. The post does not mention the debugging switch, the Wi-Fi requirement, or the missing license. This page did not drive a TV.

The opportunity is one tap instead of the remote. A smaller product is one show, the debugging step written down, and the two tested apps named. A remote that works on any TV without developer mode is not this readme.

Do not skip the USB debugging step. Do not call it licensed.

The problem

A smart TV still means apps, profiles, and typing with a remote.

Who would pay for this?

Primary
Someone whose parent has a Google TV and an Android phone on the same Wi-Fi.
Secondary
A person who will turn debugging on once and leave the streaming apps signed in.
Early adopter
One show, one allow, the debugging line visible.

How could it make money?

Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what MaaTV charges.

  • No price on the post.
  • No LICENSE file in the repo.
  • The APK is a GitHub release.

What would the MVP look like?

  1. One phone, one Google TV.
  2. USB debugging on.
  3. SonyLIV or ZEE5 already signed in.
  4. One tap that plays.

How to validate the idea

  • Ask five people whether the first tap worked without developer mode.
  • If it did, the readme is stale.
  • Do not promise a TV that is not Android.

How to differentiate

  • The phone is the remote.
  • Setup is once.
  • Two apps were tested.
  • Do not become the streaming service.

Original product launch

This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. MaaTV did not write it.

It was tested on a Toshiba Google TV, Android TV 11, with SonyLIV and ZEE5 already installed and signed in. Setup turns on developer options and USB debugging on the TV, then the phone connects and the TV has to allow it. The post does not mention the debugging switch, or that the repo has no license. This page did not drive a TV.
