Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.

The startup idea
Marc posted Quillwork on October 27. It is an engine that lets any AI agent edit a real Word document without breaking it. You get the same file back. Only what you asked for changes. Everything else stays byte for byte. The repository is gardan4/quillwork. The license is Apache 2.0. The agent reads a compact text view, where paragraphs, table rows, and comments have short anchors, and sends small JSON edits. Quillwork writes each one into the original docx as a Word tracked change. Untouched parts stay byte for byte, including letterheads, numbering, styles, fields, images, and existing tracked changes. A person opens the file in Word and accepts or rejects the change. Status is alpha, 0.0.x. The API and the language can still change. Limitations: docx and docm only. Encrypted or password-protected files are refused. There is no doc, odt, xlsx, or pptx. Not implemented yet: footnotes and endnotes, hyperlinks, inserting fields, all image edits, document compare, template fill, and document properties. Images can be read and listed. The byte-for-byte line matches the post for the parts an edit does not touch. The post does not say alpha, and it does not say a hyperlink or a new image is still missing. This page did not change a clause.
The opportunity is a contract edit a lawyer can accept like a colleague's, instead of a file rebuilt from Markdown. A smaller product is one tracked change, the alpha label, and the list of what is refused. A promise that any Word feature survives is wider than the limitations.
Do not edit a password-protected file and call that supported. Do not hide the accept step.
The problem
An agent that rebuilds a Word file drops the letterhead.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- A team that already keeps contracts in docx and wants an agent to touch one clause.
- Secondary
- Someone who will open Word and accept the tracked change.
- Early adopter
- One paragraph, one tracked change, alpha on the page.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Quillwork charges.
- No price. Apache 2.0.
- The post does not name a seat.
- The model that sends the JSON is billed elsewhere.
What would the MVP look like?
- One docx in, the same file out.
- One edit as a tracked change.
- Password files refused.
- Hyperlinks and image edits marked not yet.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five people to hash the letterhead before and after a one-line edit.
- If it changed, the byte-for-byte claim failed.
- Do not count a Markdown round-trip as this engine.
How to differentiate
- The edit is a tracked change, not a new file.
- A person still accepts it.
- Alpha is printed.
- Do not become Word.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Quillwork did not write it.

This page did not edit a contract.
