The startup idea
metiu posted pedit on October 16. Grok Free has limits. This open-source tool turns words into real Photoshop layers: remove the background, extend the sky, warm it up. 62 MCP tools. Free forever. The link is github.com/metiutek/editorimage-ai. The readme title is pedit, an open-source AI image editor you can drive with words. A free layered editor, a Photoshop or GIMP alternative. Layers, groups, masks, clipping masks, 27 blend modes, adjustment layers, clone stamp and healing brush, plus generative fill, expand, image-to-image, text-to-image, background removal and upscaling. Locally, or with your own OpenAI, Gemini, Stability AI, Replicate, or OpenRouter key. The badge says 62 MCP tools. MIT. Python 3.10 or newer. It works with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, VS Code, and any MCP client. A later answer says it does not try to replace every feature: no CMYK, no 16-bit, no PSD yet. Generative fill without a GPU means pasting an API key, or running ComfyUI locally, which is not a pip package. The post says free forever. The readme does not. This page did not install it.
The opportunity is the layer edit you can still grab with the mouse. A smaller product is one sentence and one layer, with the file format named. The post says real Photoshop layers. The readme says no PSD yet.
Do not say it is free once a generative model is in the path. The key or the local GPU is the user's. Do not say it opens in Photoshop.
The problem
Asking for a layer change means leaving the file, and the result does not open back in Photoshop.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- Someone who already has an MCP client and wants an image edit without leaving the chat.
- Secondary
- A person who will finish the last stroke by hand.
- Early adopter
- One sentence, one layer, the PSD line.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what pedit charges.
- The editor is MIT. No price in the readme.
- Generative steps use a local ComfyUI or a key the user pays for.
- The post's free forever is not a line in the readme.
What would the MVP look like?
- One plain-language edit on a real layer.
- A hand correction after it.
- The missing PSD, CMYK, and 16-bit lines.
- Whose model ran, written on the screen.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five people to open the result in Photoshop.
- If it fails, the layer claim was the product, and it was early.
- Do not hide the API key behind the word free.
How to differentiate
- The agent and the mouse share one document.
- 62 tools, as the badge states.
- MIT.
- Do not become a Photoshop clone that cannot write a PSD.
Why this could be interesting now
The post and the readme agree on words, layers, and 62 tools. They do not agree that the file is a Photoshop document, or that the generative step costs nothing. The opening is one layer, with the format named.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. pedit did not write it.

Product that inspired this idea
metiu's post says an open-source tool turns words into real Photoshop layers. 62 MCP tools. Free forever. The repository is metiutek/editorimage-ai and the product is pedit. The readme says a free layered editor, a Photoshop or GIMP alternative, MIT, and the badge says 62 MCP tools. It also says no CMYK, no 16-bit, and no PSD yet. Generative fill can run on a local ComfyUI, or with your own key for OpenAI, Gemini, Stability, Replicate, or OpenRouter. The post does not say the file is not a PSD, and it does not say the model is your bill. This page did not install it.
