The startup idea

Willie's post calls Node Banana 2.0 the biggest release. He says it is still free, open source, and bring your own key. You download it, which he contrasts with installing from git. An agent in the app uses a Claude or Codex subscription. ComfyUI workflows can be used as nodes. He also lists a Mac download, Windows soon, batch runs, an asset library, and a faster model browser. He says the work happened on weekends and evenings, and that ideas he will not try first inside ComfyUI get built in Node Banana. The project describes a local, MIT editor for image, 3D, audio, and video APIs.

The opportunity is not a new image model, and it is not a clone of ComfyUI. It is the graph a working creator can hand to someone else: a few nodes, a key they already pay for, a file that runs on their machine. A smaller product picks one pipeline people already repeat, such as a product photo through a fixed set of edits, and makes that graph boring and shareable.

The post does not publish revenue. Free and open source is the current offer.

The problem

Generative work is a chain of models, and the chain lives in someone else's tab or in a workflow file nobody else can run.

Who would pay for this?

Primary
A designer or editor who already has model keys and a workflow they rebuild by hand.
Secondary
A small studio that wants the same graph on two machines without a hosted account.
Early adopter
One person who will use it on their own work this week.

How could it make money?

Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Node Banana charges.

  • The launch says the app is free and open source, with your own key. Do not invent a price on top of that.
  • Support, a hosted runner, or a pack of workflows for one job are options for a new product. They are not what this launch charges.
  • If the key is the customer's, your margin is not the model bill.

What would the MVP look like?

  1. A desktop app.
  2. A few image nodes.
  3. Bring your own key.
  4. Save and reopen the graph.
  5. One workflow a second person can run.

How to validate the idea

  • Build one graph you actually need. Send the file to one other person. See if they can run it without you in the room.
  • If they cannot, the product is the install, not the nodes.
  • Ask what they refuse to upload to a website. That is the reason to stay local.

How to differentiate

  • One kind of workflow, not every model on the internet.
  • Local by default. A cloud runner is later, if someone asks.
  • The agent edits the graph. It does not hide it.
  • Do not pretend to be ComfyUI. Import a workflow, or do not.

Why this could be interesting now

Creators already pay for several model providers, and the workflow is the part they lose when they close the tab. A file on disk is a smaller company than a new model.

Original product launch

This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Node Banana did not write it.

Product that inspired this idea

A free, open-source node editor for image and video models. The post says you download the Mac app, bring your own key, and can drop a ComfyUI workflow in as a node.
