Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.
Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 20, 2026. How we read a launch.
The startup idea
Esaia posted InstantShot on October 20. Open source, free on Mac or Windows, screenshots with custom backgrounds. Contributions welcome. The repository is esaia/instantshot. The readme says MIT. Shift-Command-1, or Control-Shift-1, opens a region in an editor: wallpapers, gradients, a window bar, size presets, arrows, blur, and export. Shift-Command-2 copies text from the screen. OCR uses Apple Vision on macOS and Windows.Media.Ocr on Windows. No uploads, no accounts, no analytics. It sits in the menu bar or the system tray. Updates come from GitHub releases, and it asks before installing. The post does not mention the text shortcut, or the update check. This page did not snip a screen.
The opportunity is a picture that is ready to post, plus the words in it, without a cloud OCR. A smaller product is one background, one local text copy, and the ask before an update. The post sold the background. The readme also sold the words.
Do not say the text goes to a server. The readme says it does not. Do not hide the GitHub update.
The problem
A screenshot is a picture, and the text in it still has to be typed out.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- Someone who already pastes screenshots into docs, chats, or posts.
- Secondary
- A person who needs the words out of a paused video or a scan.
- Early adopter
- One snip, one background, and the local-OCR line.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what InstantShot charges.
- No price. MIT.
- No account.
- The post says use it for free.
What would the MVP look like?
- One region on a background.
- One local text copy.
- No account.
- An update that asks first.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five people to copy a line from a screenshot with the network off.
- If the line is missing, the OS engine was the product, not the frame.
- Do not add a cloud model the readme does not have.
How to differentiate
- Backgrounds and markup are in the same tool as the snip.
- OCR is the operating system's.
- It asks before it updates.
- Do not become a design suite.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. InstantShot did not write it.

Product that inspired this idea
Esaia's post says InstantShot is open source, free on Mac or Windows, for screenshots with custom backgrounds. The readme says MIT. One shortcut snips a region into an editor with wallpapers, window chrome, size presets, arrows, and blur. Another shortcut copies text from the screen. OCR uses Apple Vision on macOS and Windows.Media.Ocr on Windows. No uploads, no accounts, no analytics. It lives in the menu bar or the tray, and it updates itself from GitHub releases after asking. The post does not mention the text shortcut, or the update check. This page did not take a screenshot.
