The support reply that waits for approval
One inbox where the agent drafts from the customer history, a person approves before it sends, and the cloud price is a monthly AI allowance next to a $0 self-host.

Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.

The startup idea
Waqar Azeem posted Helpin on October 8. The post calls it an open-source alternative to Intercom and Fin. Agents answer customers, keep docs fresh, and turn bug reports into pull requests. Support, projects, CRM, and docs sit in one workspace. The post says you start with AI drafting replies and you approve them. Auto-reply is a switch you turn on later. The homepage says you decide what needs approval. This page did not open a workspace.
The opportunity is the draft, and the bill that is not a per-seat fee. The post says try it free for 14 days, no card, or self-host it. The pricing page says self-hosted is $0 forever, unlimited teammates, and you cover hosting and your own AI keys. Community 0.2 is in beta. Cloud Starter is $99 a month, unlimited users, with $99 of AI usage included that month. Growth is $299 a month, or $239 a month on annual billing. The 14-day trial is a Growth trial and includes $140 of AI usage in total, not a blank check. Overage is off unless you opt in. A smaller product is one inbox, drafts that wait, and those two prices on the same screen.
Do not say the whole repo is one open-source license. The homepage says AGPL-3.0. The readme says the community app is AGPL-3.0-only, the public SDK and widget are Apache-2.0, and code in ee/ needs a commercial agreement. Do not say cloud AI is free. The allowance is metered. Do not say docs publish themselves. The post says they update, and the homepage says you choose what needs approval. A marketing page still says Community 0.1 beta. The homepage and the pricing page say 0.2.
The problem
The bot answers from one tool while the ticket, the doc, and the customer live in three others, and auto-reply is on before anyone has read a draft.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- A small SaaS team that wants one place for the ticket, the customer, and the doc.
- Secondary
- A founder who will self-host before they pay $99 a month for included AI usage.
- Early adopter
- One inbox, drafts on, auto-reply off.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Helpin charges.
- Self-hosted is $0 on the pricing page. You pay hosting and your AI provider.
- Starter is $99 a month and includes $99 of AI usage. Growth is $299 a month, or $239 on annual billing.
- The 14-day line in the post is a Growth trial with $140 of AI usage in total. No card, on that page.
What would the MVP look like?
- One shared inbox.
- A draft that does not send until a person approves it.
- Self-host at $0 next to Starter at $99.
- The trial allowance, $140, written as a total, not a month.
- The license split, community AGPL and ee/ commercial, on the same page as open source.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five teams who already use a help desk if they will leave auto-reply off for a week.
- If they only want the self-host and not the cloud allowance, the $99 was the product.
- Do not add a second channel until one approved draft is sent to a real customer.
How to differentiate
- The reply starts as a draft.
- Users are unlimited. The meter is AI usage.
- Self-host is $0 and the keys are yours.
- Do not become another chatbot logo. The inbox and the approval are the job.
Why this could be interesting now
The launch thread, the pricing page, and the repo landed together, with a beta flag and a trial that names a dollar allowance. The opening is one inbox and a draft you can reject.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Helpin did not write it.
