The startup idea
Oday Bakkour posted Helpdock on October 13. An open-source help desk on your own server. Email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and live chat in one inbox. SLAs, rules, and AI that answers from your docs or hands the chat to a person. English and Arabic. No per-agent seats. AGPL-3.0, v0.5.0. GitHub has a v0.5.0 release. The readme says the project is pre-1.0. What has shipped, through milestone M5, is the first-run wizard, a second factor, staff and roles, brands, the ticket workspace, email in and out, business hours and SLAs, rules and macros, the chat widget and the help center, in English and Arabic. The status block says Telegram, the grounded AI, and the public API are still being built. A later section lists WhatsApp, Facebook Pages and Instagram as Meta channels in development, milestone M10. Slack and Discord are planned for v1.1. Install is Docker Compose: a Linux server with 2 vCPU and 4 GB of memory, two DNS names, and ports 80 and 443. One install can host many brands, isolated with Postgres row-level security. The readme prints no price and no seat fee. This page did not deploy it.
The opportunity is the inbox without a seat license. A smaller product is email, a widget, and an SLA on a server the team already pays for. The post lists five channels and an AI as if they are in this version. The readme splits them into shipped and still coming.
Do not say WhatsApp or the docs-grounded AI are in v0.5.0. The status block says they are not. Do not say there is a cloud plan. None is printed.
The problem
Three people answer customers. The bill is for twelve seats.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- A small support team paying for seats it does not use.
- Secondary
- A company that needs the inbox in Arabic as well as English, on its own server.
- Early adopter
- One brand, email, the widget.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Helpdock charges.
- No price. The post says no per-agent seats.
- AGPL-3.0.
- The server is yours: 2 vCPU and 4 GB to start.
What would the MVP look like?
- Email in and out, and the chat widget.
- An SLA with business hours.
- English and Arabic.
- A status line for Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram and the AI.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five teams to put one real inbox on the widget for a week.
- If they still need WhatsApp before they will switch, v0.5.0 was not the product yet.
- Do not add a channel that the milestone list still marks as in development.
How to differentiate
- The install is one server, many brands.
- There is no seat line on the page.
- The AI is named, and the readme says it is not shipped.
- Do not become Zendesk with a self-host badge.
Why this could be interesting now
The post and the readme agree on AGPL, English and Arabic, email, chat and SLAs. They do not agree that WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and the AI are in this release. The opening is one inbox a team can run without a seat.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Helpdock did not write it.

Product that inspired this idea
Oday's post says Helpdock is an open-source help desk you run yourself. Email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and live chat in one inbox. SLAs, rules, and AI that answers from your docs or hands off. English and Arabic. No per-agent seats. AGPL-3.0, v0.5.0. The v0.5.0 release exists. The readme says pre-1.0, and that email, the chat widget, SLAs, rules and the help center, in English and Arabic, have shipped. The same status block says Telegram, AI and the public API are still being built. WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram are listed as in development, milestone M10. Install is Docker Compose on a Linux server with 2 vCPU, 4 GB of memory, and two DNS names. The readme prints no seat price.
