Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.
Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 6, 2026. How we read a launch.
The startup idea
OpenDots is CopilotKit’s open-source answer to a hosted always-on agent. The post says each coworker can use a browser, a terminal, and files, can show up in Slack or Teams, keeps spaces and pages for a project, and can take a voice call. It says you can self-host it and bring your own harness. The film is the introduction. It does not show a finished week of work.
The opportunity is one job that should not die with the tab: a daily check, a research page, a draft waiting for a person. A general coworker is what the launch is selling. A smaller company picks the job, the page a human has to approve, and the chat app the team already has open. The computer is the evidence. The page is the product people can review.
Cloning the template is not the business. The business is the job a team will leave running, and the rule for what it may save.
The problem
A chat agent forgets the job when the tab closes, and the files it touched are nowhere a teammate can review.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- A small team that wants one recurring job done between meetings.
- Secondary
- The person who has to review what the agent wrote before it is shared.
- Early adopter
- A team already paying for a coding or research agent and closing the tab too soon.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what CopilotKit charges.
- The post says the template is open source. Hosting, a private harness, or a seat for the review step is the paid layer.
- Do not charge for “always on” as a feeling. Charge when the page is part of the work.
What would the MVP look like?
- One job.
- One computer.
- One page.
- A person approves the page before it is saved or sent.
- No second channel until the first one is a habit.
How to validate the idea
- Run the job yourself for five days. Write down what you would have wanted waiting in the morning.
- Give that page to three teammates. If they do not open it, the job was yours, not theirs.
- Turn off anything that posts or messages until someone asks for it.
How to differentiate
- One recurring job, named in the customer’s words.
- A page they can edit, not a transcript.
- Self-hosted, for teams that will not put the files in another vendor’s computer.
- Do not compete with the model. Sit on the harness they already chose.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. CopilotKit did not write it.
