A record button that stays on the screen

Record the screen from a bar that is already there, and move the camera bubble without opening a studio.

Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.

Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 7, 2026. How we read a launch.

The startup idea

Stu Smith, head of design at Loom, says the new Mac app is generally available, and points at the Loom product page. The film shows a bar along the bottom of the screen, a Record button, and a camera bubble you can drag. One card in the film says you can move the bubble and it snaps. This page did not install the app, and it did not check a price.

The opportunity is the bar, not another video host. The person is already on the screen they want to explain. A product that opens a studio first loses to the one that is already there. A smaller company does not clone Loom. It records one kind of explanation, for one job, and puts the camera where the person asked.

Do not claim this replaces Loom. The post is Loom shipping its own Mac app. Do not invent a resolution, a plan, or a free tier. The film is a demo of the control.

The problem

A screen recording starts in a window, and the person talking is stuck in a corner they did not choose.

Who would pay for this?

Primary
Someone who explains work by recording a Mac screen.
Secondary
A teammate who will watch that recording once, not a library of them.
Early adopter
You, on the next thing you would otherwise type as a long message.

How could it make money?

Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Loom charges.

  • Loom did not put a price in this post. Do not invent one.
  • A small record bar can be a paid app, or a feature inside a tool the person already opens. Pick one before you build the host.
  • Storage is the cost people forget. If you keep the video, say who pays for it.

What would the MVP look like?

  1. One record bar.
  2. The whole screen, or one window.
  3. A camera bubble you can move.
  4. A file or a link when you stop.
  5. A way to record with the camera off.

How to validate the idea

  • Record the next five explanations you would have typed. See if anyone watches them.
  • If you still open a different recorder, the bar is not the problem.
  • Watch where you put the bubble. If you never move it, that feature is not the product.

How to differentiate

  • The control stays on the screen. No project window.
  • One job, such as a bug, a design note, or a handoff.
  • The bubble moves. If it cannot, you have a webcam in a corner.
  • Do not build a video network to test a record button.

Why this could be interesting now

Loom put the record control on the Mac today. The piece a smaller team can still own is one kind of explanation, with the camera where the person put it, and no second studio.

Original product launch

This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Loom did not write it.
