A note on the trackpad, not an iPad
A floating note a passive stylus can write on the MacBook trackpad, with the missing hover and the iPad limit on the same page.

Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.
Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 9, 2026. How we read a launch.
The startup idea
LocalHostTech posted the app on October 9. A small macOS app turns the MacBook trackpad into a writing pad for a cheap capacitive stylus. The trackpad maps to the canvas. Palm rejection reads each contact's shape. Control-Option-N opens a floating note over any app, including full screen. Free and open source. A reply, and the readme, say Apple silicon, M1 or later, macOS 13 or later, and a passive stylus with no Bluetooth. The interface is in Chinese for now. It is a modification of Trackpad Studio by Zayn Jarvis, MIT. There is no hover, because the trackpad cannot see a tip in the air. It will not replace an iPad with Pencil for fine work. This page did not install it.
The opportunity is the note that appears over the app you are already in, for a pen that does not pair. A smaller product is one window, palm rejection, and the two limits written on the same screen: no hover, not an iPad.
Do not say it works on an Intel Mac. The readme says Apple silicon. Do not say the pen hovers.
The problem
The desk has a MacBook and a cheap pen. It does not have room for another tablet.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- Someone with an Apple silicon MacBook and a capacitive stylus, and no room for a tablet.
- Secondary
- A person who wants a scratch note over a full-screen app.
- Early adopter
- One note, one pen, Control-Option-N.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Trackpad Notes charges.
- The post says free and open source. The readme says MIT.
- No price. The stylus is the user's.
What would the MVP look like?
- One floating window, including over full screen.
- The trackpad mapped to the canvas.
- Palm rejection from the contact's size and shape.
- A line that there is no hover, and that fine work still wants an iPad.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five MacBook owners with a cheap stylus to write one note over the app they were already using.
- If they only want it as a drawing app, the floating note was not the product.
- Do not add a second language until one Chinese note is kept.
How to differentiate
- The pen does not pair.
- The note floats over the current app.
- The iPad limit is named.
- Do not become a tablet.
Why this could be interesting now
The post, the reply, and the readme agree on the pen, the shortcut, and the two limits. The opening is one note a person writes without leaving the app.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Trackpad Notes did not write it.
