The startup idea
viol3 posted on November 1 that a $100 Unity asset recolors low-poly models, so he built his own with Claude in 15 minutes and made it open source, free forever. The repository is viol3/colorizer. The license is MIT. It recolors models that use a color atlas, the small texture of flat color cells. You click a part, pick a color, and see it live, without leaving Unity. Requirements are Unity 2021.3 or newer. The package is editor-only and adds nothing to builds. Status is early, v0.0.1. The readme says you may hit bugs or rough edges. The post does not say it only works on atlas models, or that the tool never ships in the player. This page did not open Unity.
The opportunity is the recolor without the $100, for people who already live in the editor. A smaller product is one atlas model, one color, and the editor-only line. A runtime recolor for any texture is a different product.
Do not say it ships in the build. Do not skip the atlas limit.
The problem
A $100 asset does the job, and a 15-minute clone still has to say what it cannot do.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- A Unity developer with low-poly atlas models.
- Secondary
- Someone on 2021.3 or newer who will accept v0.0.1 bugs.
- Early adopter
- One model, one color, the editor-only line.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Colorizer charges.
- No price. MIT.
- The post says free forever.
- The $100 asset is the thing it replaces.
What would the MVP look like?
- Open the tool.
- Pick a color on an atlas model.
- Nothing added to the build.
- Early status printed.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five people whether the recolor survived a player build.
- If it did, the editor-only line is stale.
- Do not promise a non-atlas model.
How to differentiate
- It stays in the editor.
- MIT.
- Early, and it says so.
- Do not become the $100 asset.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Colorizer did not write it.
