The startup idea
OpenAI’s launch shows a data agent in ChatGPT that answers from sources a company already uses and can return a dashboard. The problem on screen is old: the numbers exist, and the person who needs them waits. The opportunity for a new company is not a second general chat. It is a narrow door onto one system of record.
A founder could pick one source people already trust, such as a billing tool, a warehouse table, or a support inbox, and let a specific role ask questions in their own words. The product remembers which numbers the company considers official. It refuses to invent a join it cannot show.
Competing with a general assistant on every source is a bad use of this launch. The launch shows demand. A smaller product shows its work on one dataset a buyer can check.
The problem
The numbers live in warehouses and tools, and the people who need them wait on an analyst.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- Operators who need a number and will not write a query.
- Secondary
- The analyst who is tired of being the only person allowed to look.
- Early adopter
- A company with one clean source and a weekly question that always goes to the same person.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what ChatGPT charges.
- A seat price for the people asking questions, not for the whole company.
- A higher plan when more than one source is connected.
- An API if another product wants the same answers inside its own screen.
- The launch does not say what ChatGPT charges for this. Treat any price as something you have to test.
What would the MVP look like?
- One source, read-only.
- A short list of questions the team actually asks.
- An answer with the rows or the chart it came from.
- A person who can mark an answer wrong.
- No second source until those questions are right often enough to be boring.
How to validate the idea
- Collect a week of questions sent to the analyst. Those sentences are the product.
- Answer twenty of them by hand, showing the source, and see which ones people forward.
- Ask who would lose trust if a number was wrong. Sell to the person who owns that risk, not to everyone.
How to differentiate
- One industry schema, such as a clinic’s schedule or a shop’s orders, instead of every database.
- Answers that always cite the row. If it cannot cite, it says so.
- A version that never leaves the company’s network.
- A tool for the analyst, not a replacement pitch.
Why this could be interesting now
Assistants can finally sit on top of tools people already pay for. The remaining work is trust: which number is official, and who is allowed to ask. That is a product, and it is smaller than a general data agent.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. ChatGPT did not write it.
