Checks that sit on top of a coding agent
A small set of reviews a coding agent runs on itself: did the goal get met, what did it assume, what should the person still learn.

Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.
Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 6, 2026. How we read a launch.
The startup idea
Modsmith’s post is a command that installs checks around Claude. The list includes a quiz after a task, a second pass on whether the goal was met, a ledger of assumptions, effort modes, and a board that sessions can share. It also says the tool can tell you what a mod costs per turn and can vet a mod before you install it.
The opportunity is one of those checks, sold as a habit, not the whole menu. A finished agent run looks done. The useful product is the sentence that says what was assumed or what was skipped. A quiz that teaches the person what the agent just built is a second product, for teams who do not want the agent to be the only one who understands the code.
Shipping six mods at once is the launch. A company can start with one check that a team will leave on.
The problem
A finished agent run looks done. The missed assumption and the skipped test are invisible unless someone reads the whole trace.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- Developers who already run a coding agent and still read the result.
- Secondary
- A lead who wants the same check on every run, not a new agent.
- Early adopter
- Someone who has already been burned by an agent that said it was finished.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Modsmith charges.
- Free for one personal check. A seat when a team shares the rubric or the board.
- The launch does not list a price. The “cost per turn” feature is a hint that the bill is part of the product, not a price of its own.
What would the MVP look like?
- One agent people already use.
- One check after the task.
- Plain language, and a way to turn it off.
- No second agent.
How to validate the idea
- Run the check on your own week of tasks. Count how often it caught something you would have shipped.
- If it never catches anything, the check is noise.
- Ask three people to leave it on for five days. The ones who turn it off on day one have told you the wording is wrong.
How to differentiate
- One check, written for one kind of task, such as a bugfix or a migration.
- Show the assumption. Do not only show a pass or fail.
- Stay on the agent they have. Do not ask them to switch.
- A paid review of other people’s mods is a later product, after your own check is trusted.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Modsmith did not write it.
