The startup idea
Xander posted lowpoly-earth on October 21. A low-poly Earth you can fly in the browser. Real terrain, real cities from OpenStreetMap, live weather, and the real sun. Walk, drive a Ferrari, or fly a stealth jet. Open source, no API keys. He says Claude built it. The repository is xandertaylorx/lowpoly-earth. The code license is MIT. The readme says no API keys and no backend. Terrain streams from AWS tiles. Satellite imagery is Sentinel-2, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, non-commercial use only. Weather is Open-Meteo, free for non-commercial use. Buildings are extruded footprints with generated facades, not the real ones. Only simple houses get pitched roofs. Roads are painted on the ground. There are no people and no traffic. The Ferrari model and the stealth jet are in the readme. The post says real cities. The buildings are generated. A company that wants to sell the view cannot use the satellite tiles as they are. This page did not open the world.
The opportunity is a place you can walk without a game install. A smaller product is one city, the generated-facade label, and the non-commercial line on the imagery. Real terrain is not the same claim as real buildings.
Do not say the code license covers the pictures. MIT is the code. The imagery is non-commercial. Do not say the jet needs an API key. The readme says it does not.
The problem
A flat map does not let you walk a city or fly past it.
Who would pay for this?
- Primary
- Someone who wants to fly a browser map for fun.
- Secondary
- A developer who will keep the satellite tiles non-commercial, or swap the imagery URL.
- Early adopter
- One city on foot, and the facade sentence.
How could it make money?
Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what lowpoly-earth charges.
- No price. The code is MIT.
- Satellite imagery is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.
- Weather from Open-Meteo is free for non-commercial use.
What would the MVP look like?
- Walk mode in one city.
- A building labeled as a generated facade.
- The non-commercial imagery line.
- No API key.
How to validate the idea
- Ask five people whether a tower they know is the real one.
- If they say yes, the post won and the readme did not.
- Do not ship the Sentinel tiles in a paid product.
How to differentiate
- The scale is metres, and the sun is the real one.
- No account and no key.
- The buildings are honest if you say they are generated.
- Do not become a maps company.
Original product launch
This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. lowpoly-earth did not write it.

Product that inspired this idea
Xander's post says a low-poly Earth in the browser, with real terrain, real cities from OpenStreetMap, live weather, and the real sun. Walk, drive a Ferrari, or fly a stealth jet. Open source, no API keys. The code license is MIT. The readme says no API keys and no backend. Terrain comes from AWS tiles. Satellite imagery is Sentinel-2 under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, non-commercial use only. Weather is Open-Meteo, free for non-commercial use. Buildings are extruded footprints with generated facades, not the real ones. Roads are painted on the ground. The stealth jet and the Ferrari model are in the readme. The post says real cities. The buildings are not the real buildings. This page did not fly the jet.
