Difficulty is an editorial estimate of technical and operational complexity, not a score.

Startup idea analysis by Startup Ideas. Last reviewed Oct 27, 2026. How we read a launch.

The startup idea

Mithilesh posted Kinlo on October 27. Friends kept hitting the free plan of the bill-splitting app they used, so he built his own. It splits bills, reads a UPI screenshot into an expense, and keeps shared and personal spending together. Free, open source, Android, built with Claude Code. The repository is Mithilesh9mk/kinlo-app, on the master branch. The license is MIT, and the readme says reuse needs credit. The Kinlo name, logo, icon, video, and screenshots are not in that license. The app is Expo and React Native, backed by Supabase: Postgres, auth, storage, and row-level security. The preview APK is about 100 MB. It is not on the Play Store. In a reply the same day he says the screenshot is read for amount, merchant, and date, and you confirm before it is saved. The post says the screenshot fills in the expense. It does not mention the account, the confirm, or the store. This page did not add an expense.

The opportunity is one group that is tired of the free-plan wall. A smaller product is the screenshot, a confirm, and a sentence that this is a preview APK on Supabase. An app that saves the scan with no account is not this readme.

Do not say it is on the Play Store. Do not treat the brand as MIT.

The problem

The free plan of the last splitter ran out, and the screenshot is still a manual entry.

Who would pay for this?

Primary
A flatmate group that already shares UPI screenshots.
Secondary
Someone who will install a preview APK and make a Supabase account.
Early adopter
One screenshot, confirmed by hand, in one group.

How could it make money?

Possible models. Nothing here is a claim about what Kinlo charges.

  • No price. MIT for the code.
  • The brand is separate.
  • The post says free.

What would the MVP look like?

  1. One group and one expense.
  2. A screenshot that does not save itself.
  3. The not-on-the-Play-Store line.
  4. Supabase named.

How to validate the idea

  • Ask five people whether the amount saved before they tapped confirm.
  • If it did, the reply's rule failed.
  • Do not count a sideload as a store install.

How to differentiate

  • Shared and personal spending sit in one app.
  • The scan waits.
  • The code is MIT and the name is not.
  • Do not become the bank.

Original product launch

This launch is inspiration and evidence that someone shipped, not a partnership. The idea above is our reading of the broader opportunity. Kinlo did not write it.

Product that inspired this idea

Mithilesh's post says Kinlo splits bills, reads a UPI screenshot into an expense, and keeps shared and personal spending in one app. Free, open source, Android, built with Claude Code. The readme says MIT, but the name, logo, and screenshots are not part of that license. The app is Expo on Supabase: Postgres, auth, storage, and row-level security. The preview APK is about 100 MB. It is not on the Play Store. In a reply he says a shared screenshot is read for amount, merchant, and date, and you confirm before it is saved. The post says the screenshot fills in the expense, and does not mention the account or the confirm step. This page did not split a bill.
